A Tale of Me

Getting back in shape.

I haven’t been taking care of myself as much as I should. I’ve started feeling lethargic and just tired all the time.

My weight has always kinda yoyo’d, kinda like Oprah but without the denial.

A while back I finally got serious with working out and trying to eat healthy. It’s still a struggle but I think I am better off now than I was 2 years ago.

Now I just need to get back into shape. I have set a goal for my birthday, in about 4 weeks.

An exercise regimen is only good for 6 weeks, after that the body doesn’t benefit from it as much. In 4 weeks I’ll be halfway through this regimen, and hopefully I’ll have something to show for it. It’s basically an old regimen that I have just modified slightly for my needs.

Meet Blu

So it’s Blu’s 4th month birthday.

Three weeks ago Brandi and I finally got a dog. I’d always wanted a Great Dane. I just love how they look, and their size is perfect for me. Can you see a six foot plus dude walking a Chihuahua? Not going to cut it.

Anyway, so I had always wanted a Great Dane, a Harlequin to be exact.

Full grown Male Great Dane Harlequin

So we researched and found out that Danes are expensive. We got one guy who had puppies and wanted $800 for each one! I know there’s a lot more expensive dogs out there (a classmate has an English Bulldog puppy worth $4,500), but $800 seemed kinda steep. I’d rather adopt one.

Fortunately, Brandi’s sister knew of a breeder and we called them up. They just happened to have 2 puppies. One was all black with a white patch on her chest. Her sister was all white, with 3 small black patches.  Just a lil education: an all white Great Dane is a genetic mutation. And most times is accompanied by deafness, and/or blindness.

We knew it’d be a challenge, but we decided to get Blu. She is awesome. Her name comes from her eyes. Everyone loves them! And her deafness doesn’t seem to be an issue. She’s just as rambunctious as any puppy. It’s actually quite cool that I can have the TV all loud and not worry about waking her.

She got her first round of shots last week, and we found out she’s also partially blind. She has a great spirit though, and doesn’t seem to be dazed by much.

Her blue eyes, hence the name Blu.

Arrogant Jerk!

ar·ro·gant (ār’ə-gənt) – Marked by or arising from a feeling or assumption of one’s superiority toward others.

So I woke up this morning to an email calling me an arrogant jerk.
I don’t care for it, but I guess it is kinda correct.
I do tend to come off as aloof and snubby.
Maybe it’s because I think most people are idiots that shouldn’t be alive. I care not for stupidity or weakness. I respect very few people as my intellectual superiors, or equals.
But the reason I was called a jerk is because I claimed to know a person well enough to predict their reactions to a given situation.

Humans are highly predictive, and if u pay close enough attention you’ll be able to foresee what most people will do to a degree of certainty. So, please forgive me if I was wrong, though I don’t think I was. The email calling me a jerk kinda proves it. Not what I expected, but not exactly a surprise. But am guessing it’s statements like that that earn me such titles.

Anyway, I needed to get my blog up and running again. This is a good way as any to start it.

2 years, 5 months, 29 days

2 years, 5 months, 29 days – That’s how long it has been since I last blogged. 913 days! That’s quite a while.

I do not know if I’ll be consistent this time round. I hope I am.

I was going to start a new blog but couldnt come up with a fitting title. I tried logging into this old one, and surprisingly it still works.

A whole lot has changed for me in the past 2 years, 5 months, 29 days. I am still essentially the same person, but I have grown up. At least I like to think I have.

I do not want to sit back and look back on the past. It’s gone, with all its successes and many many failures. So, I am just going to look forward to the future and hope for the best, but be ready for the worst.

Wow! What a hangover!

Hey! Its me, am back. I wonder why I write as if am talking to a bunch of people when I have no readers on my blog. Must be the inner stuck-up snob that I can be at times.

Anyway, am not really hangover, atleast not in the conventional sense of the phrase. And where did that phrase ever evolve from?Am sure I’lll find out, jus give me sometime.

I digress again. I have just about had it with everything thats going on. It seems the only thing I can count on is that something will go wrong. Not that I want it too, but…

Am through with that stage of my life, (dont ask which) and am ready to go back to the way things were. How were things anyway? Who knows? Certainly not me. I’ve been so caught up with insignificant dealings that I dont know where’s up anymore. I even stopped playing shrink to my make believe friend. Not that I have a make believe friend, its just that we’ve never REALLY met, but we’re tight.

I think all that is about to change. Think is wrong, I KNOW it is about to change. So pal, I’ll be calling you in a minute, hope you are awake.

Man is a putrid creature, rarely able to govern his lesser desires, concerned only with acquiring money, power, and position.

The Good Book says that man was placed as head of all living creatures. Is it not one of the biggest irnoies that the one creature who’s supposed to be leader cannot, on the best of days, control his basest of isntincts and emotions?

If only stupidity had a cure…

One of my favorite works of art is a painting by the Dutch painter, Hieronymus Bosch titled ‘The Extraction of the Stone of Madness (The Cure of Folly).’ Or as some reference works refer to it, “The Stone Operation.”

normal1.jpgThe painting ain’t much to look at, but like most things in life, it is the simplicity of it that grabs you. In it a young man is seated on a chair about to undergo surgery. Nothing remarkable about that, unless you take in the fact that it is in the 16Th Century and medical procedures were back then, to say the least, mediocre.

My interest is piqued by what the surgery is supposed to be for. In those times, logic and medicine could not be used in the same sentence. For instance for a long time, it was believed that shedding pints of blood would help a patient get over a fever. But I digress. The man is about to have a stone removed from his head. And no, it was not lodged there by any normal means. It’s not like he was struck, or he fell on it.

The folk lore at the time stated that folly, or stupidity was caused by a stone that was lodged in the brain. The size of the stone was directly proportional to a man’s stupidity. In short, the sillier the man, the larger the rock. The man in the painting has decided that he’s had enough of being the village idiot and wants to get rid of the stone that is impeding his brilliance from shining forth. Or maybe his family pushed him to do it.

Either way, I laud him. I just wish that it were real. I wish that modern science could come up with a way to rid mankind of the stupidity and ignorance that is afflicting the world. And this is not just limited to the uneducated or the semi-literate. I would dare say that all prejudices are based on stupidity and a whole lot of ignorance. That is just one example.

All the world’s problems would be solved if everyone would just take a little time to just get to know abit more. A sweeping statement? Maybe… But look at it this way…

-If Americans had taken a little more time to find out what exactly was going on in Iraq, am sure there would have been a much more peaceful solution the debacle that was that nation. Now, calling Iraq a debacle is a great understatement.

-If the world had paid attention to Rwanda just two weeks after the genocide started, 800,000 people would still be alive and Central Africa would be a whole lot more peaceful. But instead, they decided to ignore it. And now, aside from the massive loss of life, Uganda, Burundi, and DRC have all felt the effects of that one nation’s unrest.

-If world leaders had acted a whole lot earlier, am sure Hitler woul have thought twice about setting up the concentration camps that killed millions and alienated an entire country from the rest of the world.

-If only Third World leaders would get to know how much their kow-towing to the whims of the developed nations hurt their citizens, the extent of poverty in their nations wouldn’t be so widespread. So many more lives would be saved. If only they could step up to the giant pharmaceuticals and manufacture the generic drugs that would help the massive numbers of their population that suffer from HIV/AIDS.

I could rant on and on about the folly that belies all the deaings that we as humans engage in a day to day basis. Time, though, would fail me. Some may claim rational ignorance. When is ignorance ever rational? When the cost of educating oneself about the issue sufficiently to make an informed decision can outweigh any potential benefit one could reasonably expect to gain from that decision, and so it would be irrational to waste time doing so.

For example if I need to read a whole manifesto to know a candidates stand, then rather than read it, I’d rather just vote for the one I find most attractive, or eloquent, or whoever wins the coin toss. And trust me that is and election technique. By increasing the number of issues that one would need to consider in order to pick the correct person, the politicians and their minions simply reduce it to a matter of single topic, or a party line. Thus despite having a list of about 200, a candidate may choose a single topic such as  tax reduction as his punch line. And most of us when faced with a choice between tax reduction and better infrastructure, would go for the former. Despite the fact that the candidate who promises better infrastructure has a better manifesto, and/or qualifications.

In short, life on earth would be a whole lot more better if we paid just a little more attention; tried to learn a little more.

So next time you have to make a decision, whether it is buying a product, or buying a politicians line, just take some time to find out a little more.
